Illuminations (working title): Curated by Angela Lane

Anat Ebgi Gallery, New York, NY | June 2026

Illuminations presents artists who treat light as both material (visible energy, luminosity) and metaphor (guidance, truth, knowledge, hope, and safety). Light reaches far beyond the material world; it is at once a measurable force and an immeasurable mystery. This sentiment echoes Emily Dickinson's evocation in her poem “A Light Exists in Spring” of an illumination of color pressing on the body and the landscape, emphasizing sensation over scientific confirmation.

A Color Stands Abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science Cannot Overtake
But Human Nature Feels

The same photons measured by physicists have been revered by artists and theologians for millennia as charged symbols. Inspired by both lived experience and imagination, the artworks highlight the intimate relationship between seeing and creating. In Genesis, the world begins when light is divided from darkness, bringing order and knowledge, and producing purpose from chaos. From this primal division emerge the fundamental conditions of existence: shape, color, the passage of time, and perception itself.

Bridging light’s elusive metaphysical meanings and its pastoral, celestial, and cosmic sublime, this exhibition invites viewers to reconsider how light shapes human consciousness and our understanding of reality, focusing on works that weave together scientific inquiry, spiritual symbolism, and artistic practices that harness light.
